Fascia

Understanding Fascia:
Enhancing Your Pilates Practice

What is Fascia?

Fascia, often referred to as the body's connective tissue, is a web-like structure that surrounds and supports muscles, ligaments, and bones. It plays a crucial role in maintaining the body's structural integrity and facilitating movement, by storing water, providing structure, performing transport & supply functions and generating power. The fasciae contain many nerve endings associated with the sympathetic nervous system and maintain constant communication with the autonomic nervous system.

How does it affect our wellbeing?

Awareness of fascia and its impact on our wellbeing has grown significantly in recent years. By understanding the interconnectedness of our body's various components, including fascia, ligaments, muscles, and bones, we can achieve a holistic approach to fitness and health.

Fascia training regulates our muscle tone, pulse, immune system, digestion, and respiratory rate – and also the psyche, as the fascia gives us direct/indirect access to our autonomic nervous system. Tension, stress, and spiraling or anxious thoughts can be relieved by keeping the fascia supple.

How does this awareness of Fascia affect our Pilates Practice?

For Serra, the journey towards integrating fascia awareness into Pilates began over a decade ago. Through ongoing education at the Centre for Spatial Medicine and practical application in her studio, Serratonin Pilates, she has witnessed firsthand the transformative effects of incorporating fascia principles into Pilates sessions.

Unlocking the Potential of Fascia in Pilates

By harnessing the power of fascia, Pilates becomes more than just a series of exercises; it becomes a dynamic exploration of movement and connection – it can also make movements feel more effortless, almost like the body is “doing the work by itself”. Through mindful movements that engage the fascial network, clients experience improved flexibility, enhanced body awareness, and a greater sense of overall well-being.
